Anyone out there who still cares about MIDIS should know that another Internet media repository is gone; Vanbasco was not only a source of karaoke download software but the site of a massive MIDI search engine, with each entry listing mirrors.

And there goes yet another major media hosting platform. The Gfycat site has a notice that reads, “The Gfycat service is being discontinued. Please save or delete your Gfycat content by visiting https://www.gfycat.com and logging in to your account. After September 1, 2023, all Gfycat content and data will be deleted from gfycat.com.”

...for year 3! The [community profile] marchmetamatterschallenge is focused on not just new meta, but making sure older meta gets a chance to be read and remain a part of fandom history.

While new meta is also encouraged, the priority for Meta Matters is to make sure meta doesn't vanish with sites or personal accounts when those get closed or moved. That's also why the challenge will be using the Archive of Our Own as a destination site and collection host.

This will be a month-long event kicking off on March 1 with bi-weekly check-ins. March Meta Matters will close on April 1.

Find out more about the challenge through our introduction or the FAQ. Feel free to leave questions on either post.

My apologies for not giving advance warning, but I only happened upon the notice today: be warned that if you have more than 1,000 photos on a Flickr Free Account, stuff is going to start disappearing:

After long years of people complaining they wanted off of Tumblr, people are actually leaving. Will it last? Did fandom already leave Tumblr and a lot of people didn't notice until now? Does Discord leave you in the cold because of timezones? Or are you sitting here wishing other people would set up the communities you want to be in?

A surprising amount of the Tumblr blogs I followed deleted this week.

So a friend had a great idea: a Cranky Old Fangirls Discord.
Have an invite!
That one expired. This one won't!
Come, tell us what about fandom is making you cranky! Or excited! Have fannish conversations that don't involve the word problematic! :)

It's not Imzy, but it's better at conversations than Dreamwidth, IMHO

This may admittedly be hoary gray-whiskered news to a lot of you, but in the process of going through my virtual junk drawer, I noticed that the Reocities archives of some of my favorite old Geocities haunts have evaporated. I seem to recall that Reocities was one person's labor of love; did he get socked with C's-and-D's, run out of funding, die, or what?

Posting this for a friend.

Charity zine sale. Zines donated to be sold to assist two older, long time media/zine fans in financial hardship.

Two, Teri White GEN Starsky & Hutch zines from 1979. Bound together in a two hole punch report cover, otherwise in good condition with only expected wear from age.

Promises to Keep: This was Teri’s FIRST S&H story after extensive writing in Star Trek. Illos by Paulie Gilmore (this is the Paulie later known as PJ Alexander, or Paulie Morvant Alexander of The Presses.) It’s 76 pages.

CopKiller: 168 pages. The title page is autographed and personalized to the original owner (who wants to be anonymous, but who is also a television writer and fan writer with a long history in fandom.)

Information on both is on Fanlore.

Requiem Publications is planning to put these on auction. Interested parties can email ReqPub@gmail.com to be notified when the auction page is up, or to submit prebids. Tentative closing date for the auction is August 31, 2018 Midnight EST. Please note our auctions are NOT ‘autobid’ like eBay. If an item is currently $5 and you tell us $100, THAT is your bid. The item will then be marked $100, and payment within 48 hrs or arrangements made will be expected.

As part of my effort to clear stuff out of the house, I came across my old yearbooks. (BTW, if anyone has any recommendations of places that will buy or take yearbooks, please let me know. I just want them anywhere not here without having to pay for postage). As I hadn't looked at them in quite some time, I browsed through them to see what condition they were in and ended up reading a bunch of messages across different years. I noticed a lot of people referenced the fact that I was writing stories in class.

These were mostly fanfic although I did draft an original novel at the time too as well as various short stories. (These efforts were almost uniformly terrible). The point being that while people did in fact know I was fannish about different things (which was mentioned by a few) they didn't know about fanworks or about it being part of the fan experience. If they remembered anything about me, it would be that I was going to write for a living (even though I never said any such thing to anyone).

I'm curious what experience other people had and whether they'd likely be remembered as a fan by classmates and why?

So Banana Fish was a manga back in the late 80s/90s that has just this year been adapted into an anime and is airing. I haven't yet read the manga, hope to sometime soon, but am enjoying the anime all the same.

They have set it modern times (smart phones! makes it easier for visiting Eiji to get about LA) but also kept a bit of that 80s/90s aesthetic and fashion, changed the war that haunts some of the characters from being Vietnam to Iraq and it's working (says someone who hasn't read it but w/e).

So, things going smoothly, what media piece would you love to see adapted into another form (comic/tv/movie/etc)? and why?

Hey Crankies, who where remembers The Hawkeye Initiative? That thing that went viral about putting men in 'empowering poses' usually reserved for women on comic book covers? That started with some Hawkeye fanart by Gingerhaze?

Anyone seen the fanboy tears today that the new She Ra isn't 'sexy enough'? Guess who the showrunner is? It's Gingerhaze! She also did a lot of Marvel and LOTR fan comics a long time ago, before starting her own original comic Lumberjanes.

Aaaaand all the fans in my MCU fandom spaces are too young to remember her massively popular fanart or the Hawkeye Initiative. This is a big thing, but no one knows what I am talking about. I am so happy for her! But I also feel so old and lame right now
